The Basic Science Division of the CICMD is comprised of faculty, students, and postdoctoral trainees from across the University of Florida campus. Together, we advance the fundamental understanding of cardiometabolic disease through innovative, mechanistic research that spans molecular, cellular, and systems-level biology. Our work aims to uncover the underlying pathways driving disease to inform the development of novel therapeutic strategies and translational applications.
CICMD members in the Basic Science Division utilize preclinical and experimental models to investigate the biological mechanisms of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Many of our researchers are preclinical and translational scientists, working to bridge foundational discoveries with clinical application. This includes cutting-edge approaches in molecular biology, physiology, genetics, biomedical imaging, and bioinformatics to better understand disease initiation, progression, and potential intervention points across the lifespan.
Areas of Research:
Major areas of research focus include elucidating mechanisms underlying:
- Cardiovascular function and dysfunction, including hypertension and vascular biology
- Metabolic regulation, obesity, and diabetes
- Renal physiology and pathophysiology
- Inflammation, immunity, and cardiometabolic interactions
- Aging and lifespan-related cardiometabolic changes
- Biomedical imaging and advanced technologies to visualize, quantify, and study cardiometabolic processes in vivo and across biological scales
