About Thomas A Pearson

Dr. Pearson is a Professor of Epidemiology and Medicine at the University of Florida Health Sciences Center and currently serves as the Director of UF’s MD-PhD Program and. He also is Director of the Translational Workforce Development of the UF Clinical and Translational Science Award Program and Principal Investigator of its Mentored Career Development Award Program(KL2). Dr. Pearson also directs the MD-PhD Program in the UF College of Medicine and serves as one of multiple Principal Investigators for an Institutional Training Grant (T32) in Genomic Medicine, centered in the UF College of Pharmacy.

Dr. Pearson received his Doctor of Medicine, Master in Public Health, and Doctor of Philosophy in cardiovascular epidemiology, all from the Johns Hopkins University, where he also completed residencies in preventive medicine and internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology. He holds board certifications in Internal Medicine, Preventive Medicine, and Clinical Lipidology. Dr. Pearson is a Fellow of the American Heart Association, the American College of Preventive Medicine, and the American College of Physicians. Dr. Pearson has served as a member and chair of important committees of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, the Institute of Medicine, the American Heart Association, and the American College of Cardiology. He has lectured and published extensively in the prevention of cardiovascular disease at the patient, healthcare system, community, and public policy levels.

Research Profile

Thomas A. Pearson, MD, MPH, PhD, is Professor of Epidemiology and Medicine at the University of Florida Health Science Center. Dr. Pearson received his Doctor of Medicine, Master in Public Health, and Doctor of Philosophy in cardiovascular epidemiology, all from the Johns Hopkins University, where he also completed residencies in preventive medicine and internal medicine and a fellowship in cardiology. He holds board certifications in Internal Medicine, Preventive Medicine, and Clinical Lipidology. Dr. Pearson is a Fellow of the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, the American College of Preventive Medicine, the American College of Physicians, and the National Lipid Association. Dr. Pearson’s major research interests are in the epidemiology and prevention of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, with a special interest in the prevention and treatment of disorders of lipids and lipoproteins. He has actively participated in basic science studies, clinical investigations, and community-based projects. He has previously been Principal Investigator/Program Director for numerous NIH research and training grants, a CDC Prevention Center, and a Clinical and Translational Science Award. He currently directs the Translational Workforce Development Program, the KL2 Program and the Precision Public Health Working Group of the UF Clinical andTranslational Science Institute.
