About Arch Mainous
Dr. Mainous joined the faculty of the University of Florida in September, 2013. From 2013-2020 he was the Chair of the Department of Health Services Research, Management and Policy. He is currently a Professor in the Department of Health Services Research, Management and Policy and is a Professor and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Community Health and Family Medicine. Prior to coming to the University of Florida, he was the Associate Dean for Assessment and Evaluation and Professor and Director of Research in the Department of Family Medicine in the College of Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. He is currently the Specialty Chief Editor of the journal Frontiers in Medicine: Family Medicine and Primary Care and the Deputy Editor of the journal Family Medicine. He is on the editorial boards of the Journal of the American Board of Family Medicine, Family Medicine and Community Health, and BMJ Open. He has been awarded the Maurice Wood Award for Lifetime Contribution to Primary Care Research from the North American Primary Care Research Group, the Innovative Program Award from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine and the Distinguished Research Mentor Award from the North American Primary Care Research Group. In 2024 he was awarded the ABIM Foundation’s John A. Benson Jr., MD Professionalism Article Prize. He has published more than 460 articles in peer-reviewed journals. His work has been cited >32,000 times. According to the Elsevier Data Repository of the top scientists worldwide across 22 scientific fields (174 sub-fields) he is in the top 2% of cited scientists. He has conducted a variety of studies on conditions commonly presenting in primary care including respiratory infections, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and iron disorders. These studies have been funded by a diverse portfolio of funders including National Institutes of Health, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Much of Dr. Mainous’ research has focused on improving the delivery of health care by attempting to improve detection of disease and providing the right care for the right individual.
