January 14, 2026- CICMD Invited Speaker Series- Dr. John Philip Thyfault: Exercise, fitness, and metabolic health the role of hepatic mitochondrial adaptations.

Dr. John Thyfault is a Professor at the University of Kansas Medical Center whose work explores how movement and strong aerobic fitness protect the liver and lower the chances of heart disease and type 2 diabetes. He has written more than 220 scientific papers and earned major NIH and VA funding to advance this research. He also leads key metabolism programs at KUMC as Director of the KU Diabetes Institute and Co‑Director of the Kansas Center for Metabolism and Obesity Research, supported by a large NIH center award.

His presentation will focus on the central role of hepatic metabolism in regulating whole body metabolic health in both health and disease. A central feature will focus on how exercise and intrinsic aerobic fitness influence hepatic mitochondrial to modulate metabolic health including the prevention and reversal of metabolic associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) independent of obesity status.
