The CICMD is pleased to announce that the Pilot Grant Proposal titled: Protease induced diabetic kidney injury in COVID19 patients has been selected for funding in the amount of $10,000. The development of acute kidney injury (AKI) with high-grade proteinuria in Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients has been well documented. Dr. Alli and others have reported that a significant number of COVID19 patients develop diabetes after viral infection, although the mechanism remains to be elucidated, and the incidence of these patients developing diabetic nephropathy has not been adequately addressed. Dr. Alli has assembled a skilled team of physician-scientists (Dr. Sarah Glover and Colleagues) and basic scientists (Drs. Alli, Scindia, and Song) that will allow for the successful completion of this project. The preliminary data of this pilot study will be used to assemble a competitive R01 grant on this subject.
